A newly discovered sea snail species has been named after Vozinha, the Cape Verde goalkeeper who made an extraordinary impact on the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Cape Verde Islands' experienced goalkeeper Vozinha, who left his mark on the tournament with a magnificent performance in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, has also become immortalized in the scientific world.
A SNAIL SPECIES NAMED AFTER HIM
The name of the 40-year-old goalkeeper, who stood like a giant in goal throughout the tournament, was given to a newly discovered species of sea snail.
HISTORIC RESISTANCE AGAINST ARGENTINA
Vozinha, the greatest architect of Cape Verde Islands' historic march to the round of 32 in the World Cup, made a total of 18 critical saves throughout the tournament. The experienced goalkeeper, who kept clean sheets especially against Saudi Arabia and Spain, also left a mark in the dramatic match lost 3-2 to Argentina in extra time.
A REFERENCE TO "LA ROJA"
Spanish biologist Jesus Ortea, inspired by Vozinha's unforgettable performance, named the newly discovered red-colored sea mollusk species in the Caribbean Sea after the goalkeeper. This tiny creature, featured in the scientific study "Historias de la Biodiversidad," was officially named "Aldisa Vozinha" (Vozinha sea snail). Scientist Ortea stated that he chose this name due to the creature's bright red color, which is a direct reference to the match where Vozinha kept a clean sheet against the Spanish national team, known as "La Roja" (The Red Fury) for their red jerseys.
