The volcanic formations located between the Gediz Valley and the Kula, Karataş, and Demirköprü dams are noteworthy. This land, which is believed to be 2.5 million years old, is filled with volcanic cones, explosion craters, lava flows, basalt plateaus, and tuff cover, which are the main elements of young volcanism. The volcanic formations between Gediz Valley and Kula, Karataş, and Demirköprü Dam are striking. The volcanic terrain, which is believed to be 2.5 million years old, is mostly located within Kula, with a small part in the borders of Salihli. The main elements of young volcanism include volcanic cones, explosion craters, lava flows, basalt plateaus, and tuff cover.
The ancient geographer Strabo referred to the region as "Katokekoumene," meaning "Burnt Country," and stated: "You come to a country called Katokekoumene, which is five hundred stades long and four hundred stades wide. There are no trees here. There are only vineyards from which the Katokekoumene wine, no less famous in quality than any other wine, is produced. The surface of the land is covered with ashes. The mountainous and rocky country is black as if it has been burned."
The volcanic formations are located on a plateau that is 600-700 meters high. The most interesting geomorphological landscape in the region includes young volcanic cones locally known as "divlit" and the fairy chimneys in the village of Yurtbaşı (Davala) connected to Kula. The most recent traces of volcanism come from Kuladivlit, Karadivlit, Kaplandivlit, and Çakallardivlit. Prehistoric humans witnessed this last volcanic activity and left their footprints on the tuffs. According to paleontological data, Çakallardivlit Volcano last erupted 12,000 to 10,000 years ago.
Another formation in the volcanic terrain is canyons. The Evciler Canyon on the Söğüt Stream, the Dereköy Canyon on the Gediz River, and the Adala Canyon are of the rare lava canyon type. The most magnificent waterfall formed by local collapses in the canyons is the Su Uçtu Waterfall (25 meters) within the Adala Canyon. Additionally, various karstic caves are found in the region, and the basalt columns near Sarnıçköy are also significant geological heritage.
