In Batman, the almond candy given by the brother of 16-day-old Muhammed Boran Tutar was removed from his throat during an operation at the hospital.

THE CANDY GIVEN BY HIS BROTHER GOT STUCK IN HIS THROAT

The 4-year-old son of Osman and Mizgin Tutar, one of their three children, was given almond candy to taste by his 16-day-old brother, Muhammed Boran Tutar. Noticing the situation, the older brother informed their mother Mizgin, who was in the kitchen. Seeing that Muhammed Boran could not breathe, the mother performed the Heimlich maneuver. After failing to succeed, the mother reported the situation to the 112 Emergency Call Center. After the first intervention by the medical team dispatched to the scene, baby Muhammed Boran was taken to Batman Training and Research Hospital for treatment.

ALMOND CANDY STUCK IN THE ESOPHAGUS

Warning against such incidents, Pediatric Surgery Specialist Dr. Selim Özkaya stated, "Our 16-day-old baby had almond candy put in his mouth by his 4-year-old brother at home. Later, he started to drool and showed signs of cyanosis. They informed their mother. Of course, they first performed the Heimlich maneuver, but they couldn't remove it. When they came to our hospital, the child could not swallow his saliva. We also detected that the almond candy he swallowed was stuck in his esophagus during imaging, and we performed a procedure in the operating room. Under general anesthesia, we removed the foreign body, the almond candy, which was located at the first narrowing of the esophagus. After that, we monitored our patient in the neonatal intensive care unit. He had no issues. He woke up comfortably. Currently, he has no problems. His breathing is easy. We are planning to discharge him," he said.

"FAMILIES SHOULD CHECK THE MOUTH AREA IN SUCH SITUATIONS"

Dr. Özkaya emphasized that babies should not be left alone with children, stating, "On this occasion, I can say this to inform families. Such accidents can happen at home. Our patient was lucky because he did not completely block the airway and was able to reach the hospital. Such foreign body ingestions are not very common, especially in small babies; particularly during the newborn period. Therefore, we want to warn families to not leave older siblings alone with children to prevent such incidents. Families should check the mouth area first when they encounter such a situation. Because objects like toy parts can be seen. They should remove it as they see it. If they think something has been swallowed, we need to perform the Heimlich maneuver technique, especially in such babies, by placing them on their chest and patting their back, head down. However, a doctor's examination is also important afterward," he said.

Thanking Dr. Özkaya and his team, father Osman Tutar warned everyone to be careful with their children regarding such incidents, saying, "He put it in his brother's mouth because he thought it would taste good, and his sister saw it for a moment, and the baby's breath was cut off. They informed their mother. We rushed and had to take him to the hospital urgently. We came to Batman Training and Research Hospital to our doctor. God bless him, he removed it with a very good intervention. Thank you very much. They took great care of him. We recommend that everyone pay attention to their children. Sudden things can happen with a moment of distraction," he said.
