The trial of Ziya Ecer, who killed Pınar Bayrak, the mother of three children, by beating her in Mersin, continued. While Pınar Bayrak's mother was speaking, the presiding judge reacted to Ziya Ecer by asking, "Why are you smirking?" The defendant replied, "She's lying, that's why."
Ziya Ecer and Pınar Bayrak, the mother of three children, the oldest of whom is 7 years old, with whom he lived in a religious marriage, had a dispute at home. As the argument escalated, Ecer assaulted Bayrak. Pınar Bayrak, who was left unconscious and bleeding, was taken to Mersin University Medical Faculty Hospital by Ziya Ecer and his friend A.E. (32). Despite all the efforts of the doctors, Pınar Bayrak could not be saved. After the incident, Ecer and his friends A.E., N.B. (22), Ö.B. (25), and R.B. (28), who were accused of destroying evidence at home, were detained. After being interrogated at the police station, Ecer was sent to court and arrested, while the others were released under judicial control.
INDICTMENT PREPARED
The Mersin Chief Public Prosecutor's Office prepared an indictment against the defendants. In the indictment, it was requested that the detained defendant Ziya Ecer be tried for 'intentional murder against a woman', while the other defendants be tried for 'destroying, concealing, and altering evidence'. The indictment was accepted by the Mersin 7th High Criminal Court. The hearing of the case was held today at the Mersin 7th High Criminal Court. The detained defendant Ecer, the other defendants, the lawyers of the parties, and the relatives of the complainant were present in the courtroom.
"I WAS ASHAMED TO READ WHAT YOU WROTE"
During the hearing, social media conversations were presented to the court. The presiding judge mentioned that there were threats, insults, and humiliation in the conversations between Ziya Ecer and Pınar Bayrak. The judge told the defendant regarding the messages, "I was ashamed to read what you wrote. I can't ask you about what you wrote, but there is nothing bad that Pınar wrote against you in the messages."
In response, the defendant Ecer stated, "She was driving me crazy. The messages have been cherry-picked; there is no context. Not all of them belong to me. She was leaving the house, she was being violent towards the children. I had no intention of killing my wife, and I didn't do it. We came to Mersin to start a new life. I suffered a lot. She was jealous of me. That's why I turned my whole family against me. I have never been a violent husband."
"MY DAUGHTER IS A VICTIM OF VIOLENCE"
Evşen Doğru, Bayrak's mother, who connected to the hearing via SEGBİS, stated that her daughter was a victim of violence. Doğru said, "Pınar didn't tell me much about what she experienced so that I wouldn't be upset. My little daughter would tell me that her sister was being abused. Pınar came to me because she was betrayed and abused. The defendant cursed at me on the phone and made threats. Pınar returned home for her children, for her family. On the day of the incident, I called my daughter, and when I couldn't reach her, I called the defendant. He told me my daughter was fine. When I asked to speak to her, he said the phone was broken. Until that moment, I didn't know what had happened."
JUDGE'S REACTION TO THE DEFENDANT
At that moment, the presiding judge reacted to Ziya Ecer, saying, "Why are you smirking?" To this, the defendant replied, "He's lying, that's why."
"THEY HID FROM ME THAT SHE DIED"
Continuing her defense, Evşen Doğru said, "Later, my little daughter İrem called. She wanted me to come home; I got anxious. Then my son called and said Pınar had been taken to the hospital. A number I didn't recognize called me. They said, 'Pınar fell from the balcony,' and hung up. They hid from me that she had died. When I got home, they told me Pınar had died. Why did you kill my daughter? What did you want from my daughter? She endured hunger and violence for years. I am complaining; I leave it to your justice."
"I WITNESSED MY SISTER BEING ABUSED ON THE PHONE"
İrem Doğru, Bayrak's sister, who connected to the hearing via SEGBİS, said the following:
"On the day of the incident, I was talking to my sister on the phone in the afternoon. My sister was at home. As soon as the defendant entered, he started cursing and then became violent. I witnessed my sister and the children begging. I heard all of them. A few minutes later, the phone went dead. The next day, my sister called. She said Pınar had been taken to the hospital. I called the university hospital, and they said she was in intensive care. It turned out she had passed away at that time. I am complaining."
The defendants, who were not in custody, also denied the allegations of destroying evidence and requested their acquittal. The court panel, which listened to the parties, decided to continue the detention of the defendant Ziya Ecer and postponed the hearing for the completion of deficiencies, examination of evidence, and hearing of other witnesses.
