This claim was denied by the CHP. Özgür Çelik, the CHP Istanbul Provincial Chairman, announced that Tengioğlu had been receiving assistance from the Beyoğlu Municipality for the past 8 months.
New details have emerged regarding the attack on CHP Chairman Özgür Özel after the funeral program he attended at the Atatürk Cultural Center (AKM).
CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, who attended the farewell ceremony for Sırrı Süreyya Önder, was attacked outside the AKM. The assailant, 66-year-old Selçuk Tengioğlu, was reported to have a criminal record for previously killing his children. The assailant, who was caught and taken into custody, stated in his first statement, "I applied to the Republican People's Party for a food card before, but they didn't give me food because I wasn't a party member. I had been angry for a long time because of this. I had been holding onto the anger I had accumulated regarding CHP calling young people to the streets. I left the apart hotel I was staying in Taksim, heard there was a program. When I went there, I actually had no intention of attacking, but I couldn't control my nerves when I saw it."
FOOD CARD CLAIM DENIED
CHP Istanbul Provincial Chairman Özgür Çelik emphasized that the assailant Selçuk Tengioğlu's defense of "I got angry because I couldn't get help from CHP" does not reflect the truth. "We have information that this person has been receiving regular assistance from the Beyoğlu Municipality for 8 months. We asked our mayor, it is registered in the system. What they said is not true," he said.

After the memorial ceremony held for TBMM Deputy Speaker and DEM Party Istanbul Deputy Sırrı Süreyya Önder, Özel was punched by the assailant who approached him as he was leaving the AKM. CHP Chairman Özel was escorted by bodyguards and left the area under security measures, while the suspect, who was taken into custody by police teams, was identified as Selçuk Tengioğlu (66).
BRUTALLY KILLED 2 CHILDREN
The suspect, taken to the Beyoğlu District Police Department, was sent to the Istanbul Public Security Branch after his procedures there. It was determined that the suspect, who was investigated by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, had killed his daughter M.T. (15) and son B.T. (17) in İskenderun, Hatay on May 9, 2004, and had injured his younger daughter G.T. (11), for which he was sentenced to life imprisonment and was released from prison on conditional parole in 2020. It was also learned that the suspect had no connections with any political party or organization and that no findings regarding his mental health were found.
