An incident at a Catholic high school in Wales has shaken the education world and the public. The school principal, Dr. Anthony John Felton (54), lost his temper when he learned that the woman he was having a secret affair with was also involved with his assistant, and he attacked the assistant within the school.
Felton attacked his colleague Richard Pyke from behind with a heavy wrench. Security camera footage showed him swinging the wrench like a baseball bat. Pyke was struck on the head and was taken to the hospital, but he was not in life-threatening condition.
The background of the incident was even more striking. Felton had a secret relationship with a female teacher whose name has not been disclosed. They had a child from this relationship, and his wife Maria was unaware of it. Maria also worked as a teacher at the same school.
Felton later learned that his mistress was also having a relationship with his assistant Richard Pyke. Unable to cope with this situation, the principal sent an email to school staff shortly before the attack, stating that he was "sorry for what he was about to do."
In the email, Felton harshly accused the female teacher, and minutes later, he attacked Pyke. The court stated that the incident was entirely the result of uncontrolled jealousy and anger.
The court sentenced Felton to 2 years and 4 months in prison. The judge remarked that it was an "unprecedented" event for a school principal to attack his own assistant within the school.
After spending time in prison, Felton expressed deep remorse for his actions, stated that he was very afraid of going to jail, and mentioned that he was placed under supervision in the early days because he was prone to suicide.
