In Turkey, 24 large districts that meet the criteria for becoming a province, such as population density, economic vitality, geographical location, and distance to the provincial center, have been identified. These districts, from Alanya to Yüksekova, Tarsus to Çorlu, located across Turkey, are awaiting provincial status.

An exciting development is on the agenda in Turkey's administrative structure. 24 districts, which have reached a position to compete with their provincial centers in terms of population structure, urbanization rate, economic volume, and geographical features, fully meet the criteria required to become provinces. These districts, candidates to become Turkey's 82nd province and beyond, are managed almost like cities, from their local economies to their population potential.

Here are Turkey's 24 new province candidate districts that meet the criteria for becoming a province according to their geographical regions:

MEDITERRANEAN REGION

The Mediterranean is one of the regions with the most weight on the list, both with its coastal districts with high tourism potential and its industry/agriculture giants.

  • Adana: Kozan
  • Antalya: Alanya, Manavgat
  • Hatay: İskenderun
  • Mersin: Tarsus

MARMARA REGION

In Marmara, the center of industry, trade, and population density, giant districts that economically nourish their provinces draw attention.

  • Balıkesir: Bandırma, Edremit
  • Bursa: İnegöl
  • Kırklareli: Lüleburgaz
  • Tekirdağ: Çorlu

SOUTHEASTERN ANATOLIA REGION

With their deep histories, vast agricultural lands, and rapidly growing populations, these districts of the Southeast are strong candidates also due to their distance from provincial centers.

  • Mardin: Midyat
  • Şanlıurfa: Siverek
  • Şırnak: Cizre

EASTERN ANATOLIA REGION

  • Hakkari: Yüksekova
  • Van: Erciş

AEGEAN AND CENTRAL ANATOLIA REGION

In Central Anatolia and the Aegean, spread over large geographical areas, these centers, which are the heart of agriculture and industry, more than meet provincial standards.

  • Ankara: Polatlı
  • Aydın: Nazilli
  • Konya: Ereğli
  • Muğla: Fethiye

BLACK SEA AND EARTHQUAKE REGION

The coastal and industrial locomotives of the Black Sea, as well as the major centers rising from the ashes after the disaster of the century, have also taken their place on the list.

  • Kahramanmaraş: Elbistan
  • Ordu: Ünye
  • Zonguldak: Ereğli

WHAT CONDITIONS ARE REQUIRED TO BECOME A PROVINCE?

Population alone is not sufficient for a district to be granted province status. Among the determined criteria, numerous vital elements are evaluated together, such as the district having a population of at least 100,000, being at least 30 kilometers away from the provincial center, urbanization level, transportation networks, economic diversity, and adequacy of education/health infrastructure.
