In the town of San Pedro Huamelula in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, Mayor Daniel Gutiérrez entered into a symbolic marriage with a female alligator called "princess" as part of a tradition lasting over 230 years. Local belief holds that the ceremony will bring rain, abundance, plentiful fish, and good harvests.
The extraordinary ceremony held annually in the town of San Pedro Huamelula, located in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, once again featured colorful scenes this year. Mayor Daniel Gutiérrez performed a symbolic marriage with a female crocodile, which locals refer to as the "princess."
In the ceremony, attended by town residents in traditional attire, the crocodile was dressed in a white wedding gown and paraded through the town accompanied by music and dances. For safety reasons, the animal's mouth was tied, and after the wedding, the mayor completed the ritual by kissing the crocodile.
SYMBOLIZES PROSPERITY AND PEACE
The ritual, which dates back approximately 230 years, is said to symbolize the historical unity between the local Chontal and Huave indigenous communities. According to local belief, the mayor represents the Chontal king, while the crocodile represents the Huave princess. It is believed that this symbolic marriage brings rain, a bountiful harvest, abundant fish, and prosperity.

Speaking after the ceremony, Mayor Daniel Gutiérrez said, "We celebrate the union of two cultures. Our people are happy."
