Yesenia Lara Gutierrez, who was running for mayor, walked through the streets greeting the public. Those moments were also broadcast live on Gutierrez's social media account. According to the footage, a smiling crowd that was cheering suddenly began to flee when gunshots were heard. After 20 gunshots, Gutierrez was seen lying on the ground in a pool of blood in the empty area. In addition to Gutierrez, three others lost their lives as a result of the attack. Additionally, three people were injured.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated in her remarks regarding the incident that federal support would be provided to the Veracruz state government to find the perpetrators. Gutierrez, who was killed in the armed attack, was a candidate from the ruling Morena Party, to which Sheinbaum also belongs.
