Nineteen-year-old Lyaman Mammadli faced severe criticism from the groom and his family for wearing a wedding dress with an open shoulder. Shortly after the wedding, unable to endure the relentless backlash, the young woman took her own life, leading to deep sorrow among her family and throughout the country.
The tragic event that took place in the city of Mingachevir, Azerbaijan, has caused a great stir across the country. 19-year-old Lyaaman Mammadli faced backlash from the groom's family and relatives due to the off-shoulder wedding dress she wore on the night of her wedding to 33-year-old Elnur Mammadli. Allegations that the young woman "looked naked" continued even after the wedding.
GREAT PSYCHOLOGICAL COLLAPSE
According to her relatives, Lyaaman experienced a significant psychological collapse due to the endless criticisms following her wedding night. According to a report by Yaşar Anter from the Sözcü newspaper, the young woman took her own life in the garden of their home in Mingachevir a day after the wedding, leaving her family and the entire country in mourning.
"SHAME ON YOU"
Grieving father Murad Bayramov stated that the pressures that began on the day of his daughter's wedding resulted in her death, saying, "My daughter's husband and family caused a fight in my house because of the wedding dress. They said, 'Shame on you! How could you allow your daughter to wear such an embarrassing wedding dress?' We told them it was a normal wedding dress, but they did not calm down. My daughter could no longer bear it and committed suicide," he said.
GROOM EXPELLED FROM THE FUNERAL
Bayramov said he expelled the groom Elnur Mammadli from his home, who wanted to attend his daughter's funeral. Following the incident, the Azerbaijani police launched a large-scale investigation upon the father's complaint. The death of the young bride has brought the discussions about the balance between social pressure and traditional values back to the forefront.
