U.S. President Donald Trump targeted Colombian President Gustavo Petro with harsh words in a statement to reporters. Trump warned that Petro would "get into big trouble" if he didn't act wisely, saying, "They are making cocaine and selling it directly to the U.S. So it would be wise for him to be smart. Otherwise, he will be next."
US President Donald Trump continued his criticisms of Latin American leaders while answering questions from journalists at a press conference. Previously stating that Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's "days are numbered," Trump this time turned his focus to Colombian leader Gustavo Petro.
"ACTING HOSTILE TOWARDS THE US"
Trump claimed that Petro has exhibited a hostile attitude towards the US, stating, "He is behaving quite hostile towards the US. If he is not smart, he will get himself into big trouble."
During his remarks, Trump emphasized that Petro "needs to get smart," otherwise he would be the next target after Maduro.
CLAIM THAT "COLOMBIA IS PRODUCING COCAINE AND SELLING IT TO THE US"
Trump suggested that Colombia poses a threat to the US due to its drug production, saying, "Colombia produces a lot of drugs. They have cocaine factories. They are making cocaine and selling it directly to the US. So, it would be wise for him to get smart. Otherwise, he will be next. I hope he is listening; he will be next."
TRUMP HAD TARGETED HIM BEFORE
Trump's harsh remarks towards the Colombian leader are not new. According to reports in the national press, Trump has previously referred to Petro multiple times as an "illegal drug dealer" and hinted that Petro could be the "next target" following the tensions with Maduro.
His latest statement raised the tone of the rhetoric even further, bringing the possibility of new tensions along the Washington–Bogota line to the forefront.
