A 3-month-old baby, Hafsa Sare Doğan, who was hospitalized in the Kahta district of Adıyaman with a high fever complaint, had her thumb cut by a nurse who was trying to remove the IV butterfly from her hand with scissors. After the incident, the baby was transferred to a private hospital in Gaziantep, where her finger was reattached after two separate surgeries, while the grieving family demanded that those responsible for the incident be punished.
NURSE CUT THE BABY'S FINGER WHILE TRYING TO REMOVE THE IV
The incident occurred last night at Kahta State Hospital. According to allegations, Abdülhakim and Belgin Doğan's 3-month-old baby, Hafsa Sare Doğan, was brought to Kahta State Hospital with complaints of weakness and high fever. The baby, who was examined here, was given an IV by a doctor. When the IV was finished, the father spoke with the doctor. The doctor instructed that the IV should be removed.
During the treatment, a nurse, whose name is unknown, came to the room to remove the butterfly from the small baby’s hand. Allegedly, while trying to cut the butterfly with scissors, she accidentally cut the baby’s right thumb. The baby’s finger was suddenly covered in blood. The Doğan couple, seeing that their baby's finger had been cut, went into shock. The mother fainted and fell to the ground upon seeing her daughter covered in blood. Due to the absence of plastic surgery at the hospital, after the initial intervention, the small baby was transferred to Gaziantep by ambulance.
CUT FINGER REATTACHED AT PRIVATE HOSPITAL
The small baby, who was taken to the private hospital in Gaziantep with the cut finger, underwent two separate surgeries to reattach the severed finger. It was learned that the treatment process for the reattached finger would continue intermittently and that it would be a long-term treatment process.
The father of the baby, Abdülhakim Doğan, who stated that they experienced great shock and sadness due to the incident, said: "After the doctor examined her at the hospital, he stated that my daughter needed to have an IV. The IV was attached to my daughter. After the IV was finished, we went back to the doctor. The doctor said the treatment was over and sent us to the nurse's room to remove the IV. However, when we arrived, the previous nurse was not available. At the door, another nurse, who should not have been on duty, immediately tried to intervene.
"WE STARTED TO LOOK FOR MY DAUGHTER'S FINGER"
Instead of carefully removing the bandage by hand, she did not put in much effort. She suddenly grabbed a large pair of scissors. Carelessly, in a negligent manner, she struck with the scissors, and my daughter suddenly screamed. Then we saw that blood started to come from my daughter's finger. We immediately called the doctors. We started to look for my daughter's finger. They took us to another room and intervened there. Later, they told us that the finger reattachment could not be done here and transferred us to the hospital in Gaziantep."
"MY HEART ACHED, MAY OTHERS NOT SUFFER"
Doğan also claimed that they were transferred to Gaziantep late, saying: "In a place where seconds are very important, we frequently asked, 'Where is the ambulance?' In sensitive matters like this in a place like Kahta, the ambulance should be faster and more efficient. Because we are talking about an organ. When an organ is damaged, it may not be the same as before. My heart ached.
May no one else suffer. My wife fainted at the hospital and fell to the ground. We experienced a huge problem there, and they transferred us here at night. We arrived here at night. In addition, no one from the hospital authorities or the Provincial Health Directorate has contacted us to apologize or explain the situation. We have really been distressed about this."
"WE EXPECT AN ADMINISTRATIVE AND JUDICIAL INVESTIGATION"
Doğan also stated that they would file a complaint against the hospital and the nurse who cut his daughter's finger and would seek all their legal rights, saying, "All our legal rights are reserved. We will carry out all legal procedures and whatever is necessary. Because we are talking about an organ. It is not possible for an organ to return to its original state. We have been victimized, our hearts ached, and we want our victimization to be addressed immediately. We expect an administrative and judicial investigation to be conducted against the person who cut my daughter's finger, and we demand their immediate suspension. May no one else suffer. Health is the foundation of everything. It is unacceptable for anyone to have such negligence and carelessness." It was learned that an investigation has been initiated regarding the incident.
