According to CNN, Crooks was identified as a Republican in the closed primary system that allows members to vote for the candidate they want to be the party's nominee. Although Crooks is listed as a Republican in Pennsylvania's voter database, he was found to have donated $15 to a Democratic political action committee called the "Progressive Turnout Project" in 2021. The attacker's father, Matthew Crooks, stated that he would not speak about his son until he had spoken with officials.

Former US President Trump, who was running for president from the Republican Party, was attacked with a gun during a rally in Pennsylvania while addressing his supporters from the podium. Trump, who was injured in his right ear, was reported to be in good health. One person was killed and two others were injured in the attack.
The US Secret Service announced that the attacker, who fired multiple shots from a high place outside the rally area towards the podium, was neutralized. The FBI classified the attack as an assassination attempt.
