Last Monday, a police officer in São Paulo, Brazil, faced significant backlash after throwing a motorcyclist off a bridge during a traffic stop.
In leaked footage on social media, 29-year-old Military Police officer Luan Pereira is seen grabbing 25-year-old delivery worker Marcelo do Amaral by his shirt and taking him to the edge of the bridge, before throwing him off while other officers looked on.
According to eyewitnesses, do Amaral was able to get out of the water on his own after falling into the stream and was taken to the hospital by a friend. The victim's father, Antonio do Amaral, stated that his son is in good condition but that the incident is unacceptable.
"The police exist to protect the public. My son has no criminal record. I expect an explanation from this police officer," he said.
São Paulo Governor Tarcísio de Freitas stated, "Those who go as far as throwing someone off a bridge are clearly unfit to wear this uniform."
Attorney General Paolo Costa described the incident as "shocking and absolutely unacceptable." Pereira and 12 of his colleagues have been suspended during the investigation process.
Meanwhile, the police report contained no information about the incident of throwing someone off the bridge. It only mentioned that motorcyclists were being chased and that individuals at a party attacked the police with bottles and stones.
It has also emerged that Pereira had previously killed a motorcyclist with 12 bullets in 2023 but was acquitted on grounds of self-defense.
