The claim that false witnesses are being sought for Ekrem İmamoğlu, who was arrested as part of a corruption investigation against the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB), has caused an uproar. The Communications Directorate, which denied reports published by some media outlets, stated, "In our country, judicial processes are conducted by independent courts based on evidence."
The Mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem İmamoğlu, was arrested in the corruption investigation against the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and sent to Silivri Prison.
THE ALLEGATION CAUSED OUTRAGE
The development caused a significant reaction in the public, while an allegation circulated on social media quickly led to outrage.
THERE IS A STATEMENT FROM THE COMMUNICATION DIRECTORATE
Following reports that a false witness was being sought for İmamoğlu and that prisoners were being threatened via SEGBİS to testify against him, a statement came from the Communication Directorate's Disinformation Combat Center.
"THESE STATEMENTS ARE LEGALLY INVALID"
In a statement made from account X, it was said, "The allegation that 'a false witness is being sought for Ekrem İmamoğlu' shared from some social media accounts is not true. According to the Criminal Procedure Code, no witness can give a statement under pressure; otherwise, these statements are legally invalid."
"DO NOT PAY ATTENTION TO BASELESS ALLEGATIONS"
The allegations that prisoners were threatened via SEGBİS to testify against İmamoğlu are completely unfounded. In our country, judicial processes are conducted by independent courts based on evidence. Witness statements are only considered valid when supported by other material evidence.
Judicial authorities call suspects or witnesses to give statements within the framework defined by law in case of any suspicion of a crime. "Do not pay attention to baseless allegations aimed at manipulating public opinion," were the statements used.
