In Denizli, Asiye Kaytan, who prevented her granddaughter Asiye Vural from going out in the evening by hitting her on the arm with a slipper, was sentenced to a total of 4 years and 2 months in prison for the charges of 'considering a mother's slipper as a weapon' and 'deprivation of liberty.' If the sentence is upheld, Kaytan will go to prison and said, "I didn't know a mother's slipper was a weapon."

On August 9, 2024, in the Topraklık neighborhood of Pamukkale district, Asiye Vural, who lives with her grandmother Asiye Kaytan and shares the same name, wanted to go outside after returning from work in the evening. Grandmother Asiye Kaytan locked the door and did not allow her granddaughter, whose parents are separated, to go out for her safety. At that moment, Asiye Kaytan, who picked up the slipper she was wearing at home, walked towards her granddaughter, who was trying to open the door despite being denied, and hit her on the arm. Granddaughter Vural responded by hitting her grandmother on the head with her phone. Asiye Kaytan was injured on the head. After her treatment at Denizli State Hospital, Kaytan was discharged.

PUBLIC CASE

As part of the investigation, Asiye Vural's statement was taken. At the police station, Asiye Kaytan and her granddaughter Asiye Vural did not file complaints against each other, but a public case was opened. In the indictment prepared by the Public Prosecutor's Office, it was stated that grandmother Asiye Vural hit her granddaughter with a slipper, which is considered a weapon, locked the door, and that granddaughter Asiye Vural defended herself by hitting her grandmother on the head with her phone. A case was filed against Asiye Kaytan for the crime of 'depriving a person of their liberty' with a request for up to 14 years in prison at the 12th Criminal Court of First Instance. A decision was made in the case on February 25. The court sentenced Asiye Kaytan to 2 years and 6 months in prison for the crime of 'depriving a person of their liberty by using force, threat, or deception.' The court increased this sentence to 4 years and 12 months in prison, citing that the crime was committed with a slipper, which is considered a weapon against a descendant. Then, the court reduced the sentence to 4 years and 2 months in prison. The decision was appealed to the appellate court. If the decision is upheld, Kaytan will go to prison.

"NO ONE SHOULD HIT THEIR CHILD"

Asiye Kaytan stated that she would never pick up a slipper again, saying, "My granddaughter wanted to go out in the evening, I did not allow it, I locked the door. I hit her on the hand with the slipper, and she hit me on the head with her phone. When I started bleeding, she got scared and called an ambulance. They took me to the hospital and her to the police station. I went to court and told the judge that I did not want my granddaughter to be punished. She did not get punished, but I received a 4-year 2-month prison sentence because of the slipper, which is considered a weapon. Am I going to prison after 80 years? How will I live there? I have had surgery and I walk with difficulty. They will put me in prison because of a mother's slipper. No one should hit their child with a slipper that is considered a weapon. I had no idea a mother's slipper was a weapon," she expressed. Granddaughter Asiye Vural said, "My grandmother received a prison sentence because she hit me with a slipper and prevented me from leaving the house. I did not want it to be this way. I did not file a complaint against her, but a public case was opened. Mothers should not dismiss it by saying 'it's just a slipper.' They should never hit their children with a slipper that is considered a weapon," she said.

"WE HOPE THE DECISION WILL CHANGE LEGALLY"

Asiye Kaytan's lawyer Hasan Ozan Orpak also stated, "There was previously a case in Denizli regarding a mother's slipper being considered a weapon. The value of a mother's slipper in Turkish society is undeniable. We all grew up with a mother's slipper. I am not entering into whether it is right or wrong. When the news about the mother's slipper first came out, it was reflected in the world public opinion. There is currently a decision from the local court. We hope that this will change legally during the appeal process. It has been previously published that the slipper is not a weapon," he said.
