In the Eastern Black Sea region, the heavy rain that was effective at night turned into snow in the high areas. The highlands of Rize, Artvin, and Trabzon were covered in white.
In the Yukarı Kavrun Plateau, located at an altitude of 2,300 meters in the Çamlıhemşin district of Rize, the snow thickness reached up to 15 centimeters in places. The roofs of the plateau houses, covered with green foliage, were blanketed with white snow. Shepherds who moved from the plateau before the snowfall brought their flocks down to safe areas. The journey of the shepherds was captured by a mobile phone camera.
"PLATEAUS ARE BEAUTIFUL BUT SNOW CAME A BIT EARLY"
Ali Karoğlu (96), a plateau dweller who welcomed the snowfall with folk songs, said, "Summer is gone, autumn has come. We have returned again this year. I couldn't recognize you, my eyesight has faded. The plateaus are beautiful, but the snow came a bit early; it didn't even wait for the 25th," he said.
Professional mountaineer Ali Yılmaz, who helped the livestock owners bring their herds down, stated, "According to the information we received from the meteorology, we learned that it would snow in the region. So we decided to bring our migration down. We have now brought our animals to the village. We are very happy that we did not get caught in the snowfall," he said.
