A taxi driver in Istanbul's Beyoglu district was fined 9,574 Turkish lira for not using the taxi meter and quoting prices through bargaining to tourists. The tourist recorded the moments when the taxi driver asked for 600 TL for a fare of 110 TL. A tourist visiting Istanbul wanted to take a taxi from the Galata Bridge to Dolmabahçe Palace. The tourist recorded the moments on their mobile phone and approached the taxi driver to ask how much it would cost to go to Dolmabahçe. The taxi driver said it would cost 600 lira. The tourist shared the footage on social media and expressed their outrage. TRAFFIC TEAMS IDENTIFIED THE TAXI DRIVERAs a result of the work carried out by the civilian traffic teams affiliated with the Istanbul Traffic Inspection Branch, it was determined that on July 18, 2023, the driver of the commercial taxi with license plate 34 TAZ 50, H.Y., demanded 600 TL from tourist passengers. After the footage was shared on social media, the teams took action and quickly identified the driver. 9,000 TL FINE IMPOSED, VEHICLE SUSPENDED FROM TRAFFICAs a result of the investigations, driver H.Y. was fined a total of 9,574 TL for the offense of not using the taxi meter according to Article 31/1-B of the Law on Highways Traffic (KTK) and for carrying passengers despite the expiration of the municipal work permit period according to Article Ek2/5, with 3,135 TL and 6,439 TL respectively. In addition, the operating license of the commercial taxi with license plate 34 TAZ 50 was suspended for 10 days and the vehicle was suspended from traffic.
