The death toll from devastating floods caused by rivers overflowing in northern Nepal on Wednesday has risen to 734. As search and rescue efforts continue unabated in the region, the painful wait of families in front of hospitals continues after the disaster, which has left nearly 3,000 people missing.
The death toll in the devastating flood disaster in regions of Nepal near the Chinese border has risen to 734. While approximately 2,500 people, including 589 foreigners, are still unaccounted for, new flood warnings have been issued to the local population due to rising river water levels.
HUNDREDS OF FOREIGN NATIONALS ON THE MISSING LIST
According to the latest information shared by Nepal's National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, the destruction left behind by the flood waters that struck the Rasuwa district and its surroundings on the Chinese border is becoming clearer every day. In the search efforts carried out by teams under difficult conditions, the lifeless bodies of 734 people have been reached so far. The biggest concern in the disaster zone is the high number of missing persons. Authorities reported that a total of 2,498 people, including 589 foreign nationals, are still unaccounted for.
NEW FLOOD WARNING
While search and rescue efforts continue in the region, the risk of a new disaster is also imminent. Nepalese authorities issued an urgent warning that new floods could occur, stating that the water level in the Bhotekoshi River has risen to dangerous levels. Citizens living in the areas affected by the disaster were asked to be on high alert and stay away from risky areas. Meanwhile, it was noted that the cross-border impact of the disaster has raised the death toll to 7 in China's Tibet Autonomous Region.
$3.6 MILLION AID SUPPORT FROM THE US
International aid has also begun to take shape over the deepening humanitarian crisis. The US Department of State announced its support plan for the disaster zone in a statement made on the X platform (formerly Twitter). The statement said that a humanitarian aid package of more than $3.6 million, including meeting the emergency food needs of up to 10,000 households, would be provided to Nepal.
HELPLESS WAIT IN FRONT OF THE HOSPITAL
In parallel with the search and rescue activities in the field, identification procedures are being carried out for victims pulled from the mud and water piles. In front of the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in the capital Kathmandu, however, a tragedy is unfolding. Hundreds of families wishing to learn the fate of their missing loved ones are gathered in the hospital garden, waiting helplessly and anxiously for news from authorities.
