A terrible natural disaster occurred in Switzerland. A massive piece of glacier broke off from the mountain, causing an avalanche that completely destroyed a small village.

There were 300 people living in the village of Blatten. When experts realized there was danger, they evacuated the villagers a week ago. Fortunately, they did this because a huge piece of the Birch glacier broke off at 3:30 PM.

The piece of glacier that broke off was so large that it created an effect equivalent to a 3.1 magnitude earthquake. A massive mass of ice, soil, and debris rolled down towards the village and completely covered it.

Drone footage shows that the village is now completely covered in mud and soil. A river flows through it. The village mayor, Matthias Bellwald, said, "An unimaginable thing happened. We lost our village, but we did not lose our courage."

No one was injured or killed because everyone had been evacuated in advance. But the villagers can no longer return home because the village has completely disappeared.

The government sent the army to the scene. They said they would provide financial assistance for new shelters for the villagers. Experts warn that other nearby villages may also need to be evacuated.

Glaciers in Switzerland are melting due to global warming. In 2023, 4% of the country's glaciers disappeared. In 2022, 6% melted. Therefore, such dangerous situations are occurring more frequently.

Last year, a similar danger was experienced in another village, Brienz, and the villagers were evacuated.
