The U.S. administration has notified Congress of the approval for a total of $1 billion in new arms sales to Israel. The timing of this development is noteworthy as it comes ahead of Trump's meeting with Netanyahu.
The U.S. administration has reportedly notified Congress for approval of a new $1 billion arms sale to Israel, which includes 500-kilogram bombs.
APPROVAL FOR ARMS SALE TO ISRAEL
According to a report by the American Wall Street Journal (WSJ), citing U.S. officials, the Donald Trump administration is preparing for a new arms sale to Israel.
The report states that the Trump administration has called on the leaders of the first committee in Congress to approve the sale of 4,700 units of 500-kilogram bombs worth $700 million and armored bulldozers worth $300 million to Israel.
The timing of the new $1 billion sale coincides with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit to Washington, where he is also expected to meet with President Trump.
Additionally, U.S. media reported that Netanyahu would seek Trump's support for the approval of a new $8 billion arms sale during the meeting.
TRUMP'S FIRST TASK WAS TO REMOVE OBSTACLES
Some Democratic figures had previously not given the green light for the $8 billion arms sale to Israel, which came up during the final days of the Joe Biden administration.
In the early days of his administration, Trump had removed the obstacles to sending 1-ton bombs to Israel that had been suspended during the Biden administration. When the U.S. government wants to sell arms to a foreign country, it must notify Congress in accordance with relevant laws. After the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the House Foreign Affairs Committee approve the sale, if there are no objections in Congress within a certain period, the sale proceeds.
