In London, the capital of England, 150 people were detained during a protest organized to support the banned group 'Palestine Action'.
The police in England detained 150 people during a protest in the capital London in support of the group "Palestine Action," which has been declared a banned organization.
Protesters gathered in Parliament Square in the capital at 1:00 PM local time, responding to a call from the group "Defend Our Juries," which opposes the banning of "Palestine Action," known for its actions against companies working with Israel.
HARSH INTERVENTION BY POLICE
Protesters opposing the ban brought empty banners and pens, writing, "I am against genocide, I support Palestine Action." The London Metropolitan Police intervened with the demonstrators supporting the group.
150 PEOPLE DETAINED
The police reminded that "Palestine Action" is one of the banned organizations and detained 150 people participating in the protest.
In England, a protest was also held on August 9 in support of the "Palestine Action" group, which was included among banned organizations as of July 5, and the police had detained more than 500 people participating in that protest.
DECLARED A BANNED ORGANIZATION
The first step towards declaring "Palestine Action" a terrorist organization was taken after a protest at the Royal Air Force's (RAF) Brize Norton airbase in Oxfordshire on June 20.
Group members entered the airbase that morning and sprayed red paint on the engines of two British military aircraft. Activists who left a Palestinian flag at the protest site stated that the two planes were used in operations in the Middle East. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper had presented a bill to Parliament aiming to declare "Palestine Action" a terrorist organization alongside two far-right, racist organizations operating in Europe following this protest.
The bill was approved in the House of Commons on July 2 and in the House of Lords on July 3. "Palestine Action" applied to the High Court for a stay of execution, but the court rejected the application on July 4.
As of July 5, the group was included among banned organizations, and with the enforcement of the ban, membership or declarations of support for the group could be punished with up to 14 years in prison. Additionally, wearing a t-shirt or badge bearing the group's name could result in up to 6 months in prison. Since the enforcement of the ban, hundreds of people supporting the group have been detained.
