30-year-old cosmetic doctor Rielle Longhurst died after drowning in the bathtub following a night of drinking wine and taking medication after learning that her boyfriend Charlie Procter had cheated on her.
According to the investigation at the West London Coroner's Court, the incident occurred on August 21 last year in an apartment in Notting Hill. Charlie had visited Rielle after learning that she was with another woman during a business trip in France.
Heartbroken Rielle had mentioned to Charlie that she wanted to commit suicide, but Charlie did not take it seriously and went to his family's home around 10 PM. The next morning, he became worried when he couldn't reach Rielle and noticed she was not active on social media.
When Charlie went to the apartment, he couldn't get in, but when he looked through the bathroom window, he saw his girlfriend lying motionless in the bathtub. He climbed in through the window, pulled her out of the water, and began performing CPR. Despite Charlie's efforts, who called emergency services at 12:03, paramedics reported that Rielle had died at the scene.
During the police investigation, two glasses of wine, empty medication packets, and letters addressed to her family were found in the apartment. According to toxicology reports, Rielle had alcohol in her blood above the legal driving limit. The cause of death was determined to be drowning, with alcohol being recorded as a contributing factor.
Rielle had started working as an aesthetic doctor in London in June 2023. Her father described Charlie, whom she met in 2021, as "the love of her life." One day before the cheating incident, Rielle had texted Charlie that she wanted to die because he cheated, and on the day of the incident, she sent a message stating that she wanted to break up.
Her father, Graham Longhurst, described Rielle as someone with an "all or nothing" personality and very empathetic.
Assistant Coroner Jean Harkin said while giving a verdict of accidental death: "Rielle was a very talented, intelligent, and loved person. The end of her relationship deeply affected her. Having taken a high dose of opioids and alcohol may have suppressed her nervous system, making her very drowsy. While in the bathtub, she was likely waiting for Charlie to arrive. Her family and Charlie believe she did not want to die."
Rielle completed her medical education at the University of Liverpool as one of five siblings and graduated in 2017.
