The Turkish Language Association (TDK) and Ankara University initiated a voting process for the "word of the year 2024," resulting in the selection of "crowded loneliness."
7 WORDS AND CONCEPTS COMPETED
According to a statement from TDK, 7 words and concepts determined by the Evaluation Board, consisting of experts in the field, in collaboration with the TDK and the Ankara University Communication Research and Application Center (İLAUM), were presented to the public for voting on the Turkish Language Association's website. The words deemed worthy of voting were identified as "crowded loneliness," "compassion," "alienation," "algorithm," "corruption," "artificial intelligence," and "digital fatigue."
"CROWDED LONELINESS" WAS SELECTED
It was announced that "crowded loneliness" was chosen as the "word and concept of the year 2024" in a public vote with approximately 1 million participants.
NOTABLE EVALUATION
The Evaluation Board stated regarding the concept of "crowded loneliness": "In 2024, there is an observed increase in research showing that people feel lonely within crowds. The terms 'loneliness,' which expresses singularity, and 'crowd,' which expresses plurality, can coexist simultaneously. This situation, which can be explained by sociological, psychological, and communicational reasons, manifests itself in individuals' daily lives and the ways they establish relationships."
The statement noted that research indicates that with the increasing use of social media and digital technologies, people have started to feel more lonely: "The importance of follower and like counts in social media environments, creating a so-called 'crowded' atmosphere, is perceived as a solution to the feeling of loneliness, yet it results in an increase in the feeling of loneliness. The transient relationships proposed by the digital world deepen the feeling of loneliness. On the other hand, the increasing pace of life, along with the growing human mobility, weakens social bonds, making it difficult for individuals to connect, leading them to feel lonely within crowds. The presence of many people around an individual does not mean they do not feel lonely. Having family members in the same house does not prevent one from feeling lonely at the same dining table."
