The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge, located in Guizhou province of China, is planned to open this year at a height of 620 meters. The bridge is 9 times taller than the Golden Gate Bridge and 2 times taller than the Eiffel Tower, with its last structural element placed on January 20.
With the installation of a 215-ton steel support element on Friday, the completion rate of the 1.4-kilometer-long suspension bridge has reached 80%. The bridge, rising over the Beipan River, is close to the height of the Shanghai Tower, which is the tallest building in China at 632 meters.
The bridge not only breaks records but will also facilitate transportation in the region. Locals, who currently spend an hour navigating around the canyon, will be able to cross in just 2 minutes thanks to the bridge.
The main supporting part of the project, which has a budget of £227 million (approximately 9 billion TL), consists of 93 pieces with a total weight three times that of the Eiffel Tower. The remaining construction is expected to be completed after the Chinese New Year.
Until the bridge opens, the title of "the world's highest bridge" will remain with the Beipanjiang Bridge, which is also located in Guizhou province and stands at a height of 545 meters.
