A 22-year-old woman with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) in Ağrı was hospitalized with a complaint of swallowing pens. The patient, brought to the Emergency Department of Ağrı Training and Research Hospital by her family, was found to have a foreign object in her stomach.
TWO PENS REMOVED FROM HER STOMACH
During an endoscopy operation lasting approximately one and a half hours, performed by the General Surgery team the next day, two pens were removed from the young woman's stomach, one being a fountain pen and the other a ballpoint pen. After the successful operation, the patient was kept under observation for one day and then discharged.
"THIS IS THE FIRST TIME WE ENCOUNTERED SUCH A CASE"
Dr. Adem Aslan, who performed the operation, stated that they encountered such a case for the first time, saying, "Our 22-year-old female patient had applied to our district state hospital with a complaint of swallowing pens. A foreign object was seen in her stomach on the tomography. We also observed that there was a pen in her stomach during our examinations. Previously, we had encountered foreign objects like safety pins and bone fragments, but this long and thin object is something we have never seen before. We waited one day for the stomach to empty, and during the endoscopy we performed the next day, we saw that the patient had swallowed not one but two pens. We removed the pens using endoscopic methods during the procedure, which lasted about one and a half hours. Since our patient has Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, we advised her family not to leave her alone and to avoid leaving such objects around. After keeping her under observation for one day, we discharged her in good health," he said.
