It has been reported that giant long-legged grasshoppers reaching Turkey via the Balkans have started to appear around Kocaeli, following Thrace and Istanbul. While experts indicate the activity may be due to seasonal migration, authorities have urged citizens not to panic and to report any unusual densities to relevant institutions.
The movement of locust swarms entering Turkey via the Balkans continues in the Marmara Region. For the giant long locusts first seen in Thrace and the western districts of Istanbul, many reports have started coming in from the Kocaeli area as well.
SEEN IN KOCAELI AFTER ISTANBUL
Citizens recorded and shared the locusts they encountered in their gardens, balconies, and open areas with their mobile phones. The incoming reports indicate that the locust activity is advancing toward the eastern parts of Marmara.
Previously, density was reported in the areas around Uzunköprü, Keşan, Kırklareli, Lüleburgaz, Babaeski, Çorlu, Çerkezköy, Süleymanpaşa, Silivri, Hadımköy, and Arnavutköy.
STRUGGLE CONTINUES IN GREECE AS WELL
Similar activity is occurring in Greece, which lies on the migration route. According to news in the country's press, spraying and control efforts are underway in the Kozlukebir and Sapçi regions between Alexandroupoli and Komotini due to locust density.
SEASONAL MIGRATION ASSESSMENT FROM EXPERTS
While experts note that the appearance of locusts may be related to seasonal migration movements, authorities have asked citizens not to panic. In case of unusual density, they called for reporting to relevant institutions.
