Iran has deployed the 800 km range Nazir Over-the-Horizon (OTH) radar in Gilan Province to monitor the airspace of Azerbaijan and Turkey. This move came after allegations that Israel used Azerbaijani airspace to carry out attacks on military targets in Iran. COVERAGE AREA OF NAZIR OTH RADARThe Nazir radar in Gilan keeps under Iran's surveillance a large part of Azerbaijan, Armenia, much of eastern Turkey, a significant portion of Georgia, western Turkmenistan, a part of southwestern Kazakhstan, and the airspace over the Caspian Sea. TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS OF THE RADARThe Nazir OTH radar system can detect a wide range of aerial threats, from small flying objects to ballistic missiles. Brigadier General Farzad Esmayeeli, Commander of Iran's Khatam ol-Anbia Air Defense Base, stated in 2016, "The Nazir OTH radar system is now operational, and from this point on, no flying object can enter Iranian airspace without permission." ELECTRONIC WARFARE CAPABILITY AND EARLY WARNING CAPACITYThe Nazir OTH radar system, developed by Iran, has the capability to counter electronic warfare threats and provides early warning within Iranian airspace with its 800 km range. The positioning of the radar at altitudes above 2900 meters reflects the effort to address challenges in mountainous terrains and ensures the more effective operation of air defense systems, covering a wide area.
