The Greek Minister of Defense, Nikos Dendias, announced in a plan presented to parliament in November that the Hellenic Navy aims to establish a modern fleet consisting of 16 major vessels by 2035. This plan stands out as part of Greece's efforts to modernize its naval forces. RETIREMENT OF S CLASS FRIGATES AND NEW ACQUISITIONSThe Hellenic Navy emphasized that the S class frigates, which have been in use for about 50 years, are nearing the end of their lifespan. This situation forces Greece to renew its current ship inventory. In this context, Greece is currently working on acquiring a fourth FDI Belharra frigate and is also planning the modernization of four MEKO class frigates. ALTERNATIVE OPTIONS FROM EUROPE AND THE USAThe Hellenic Navy is evaluating the European Corvette Program (MMPC) and the American Constellation class frigates. However, it is noted that these projects are still in the initial stages and that it may take a decade for production to begin. This situation indicates that Greece needs to take more concrete steps in the short term. INITIATIVES OF THE TURKISH NAVYThe Turkish Navy recently announced the commencement of construction for three significant warships: a submarine, an aircraft carrier, and a destroyer. This initiative highlights Turkey's decisive steps to strengthen its naval forces and further intensifies military competition in the region.
