The artificial intelligence-supported speed violation detection system, developed with domestic and national resources under the coordination of the Presidency of Defense Industries, can operate without an operator and is capable of simultaneously detecting the speed of six vehicles, including motorcycles, by scanning all lanes on a six-lane road. With this system, a total of 1,203,652 speed violation fines were issued in 81 provinces over a period of 8 months.

The General Directorate of Security (EGM) traffic units started using the artificial intelligence-supported speed detection system developed under the coordination of the Defense Industry Directorate 8 months ago. Initially implemented in a few pilot provinces, especially Ankara, the system was later activated in all 81 provinces. The speed violation detection system, which can operate without an operator, can simultaneously detect the speed of 6 vehicles, including motorcycles, by scanning all lanes on a 6-lane road. Additionally, vehicles can be queried directly through Polnet, and a General Information Scan (GBT) can be performed; if a vehicle that is wanted, has been seized, or poses a risk is detected, the responsible personnel can notify the teams on the route to ensure its capture. The system also detects frequently committed violations such as not wearing a seatbelt, using a mobile phone, lane violations, and weaving.

1 MILLION 203 THOUSAND VIOLATION FINES

According to information obtained from EGM; with the artificial intelligence-supported mobile speed detection system that entered the inventory in June and is currently used in all 81 provinces, 1 million 203 thousand 652 violations were detected and converted into fines by February 21. In Ankara, 161 thousand 974 drivers were fined for speed violations. The system has been developed to also apply radar in the opposite direction of traffic flow, allowing it to detect the speed of vehicles that only have a rear license plate, such as motorcycles.

Volkan Uslu, Deputy Director of the Ankara Traffic Inspection Branch, stated, "As the Ankara Traffic Inspection Branch, the penalties applied to drivers for exceeding the speed limit with the new generation mobile speed system over the past 8 months account for approximately 30% of the total penalties we have applied. This shows that speeding is the most frequently violated traffic rule. We ask our drivers to comply with the established speed limit rules. Being late to their destination by 5 minutes at most will not harm them, but adhering to speed rules connects them to life," he said.

"WORKS IN ALL WEATHER CONDITIONS DAY AND NIGHT"

Uslu pointed out that the biggest feature of the new generation mobile system supported by artificial intelligence is that it does not require operator support, stating, "This allows it to simultaneously scan all lanes of the road it is installed on, classify vehicles according to their type, and automatically apply penalties to vehicles exceeding the legal speed limit set for each type of vehicle. The advantage for us is that penalties are automatically applied by the device without the need for our personnel to detect vehicles one by one. Another special advantage of this new generation system is that it can automatically query Polnet for passing vehicles. Just as our law enforcement teams conduct GBT queries on suspicious citizens, this system automatically alerts when passing vehicles are wanted, seized, or pose any risk. We ensure the capture of these vehicles by announcing them to the teams on the route. Additionally, this new system, which can operate in all seasons and weather conditions both day and night, can also work in the opposite direction of traffic flow due to its mobile nature. This is a new feature for us. We definitely inform vehicle drivers with warning signs that we are conducting radar checks at the points where we perform radar applications, as specified in the legislation," he said.

"IT APPLIES THE PENALTY ITSELF"

Uslu stated that they generally select the locations for radar applications by analyzing areas in Ankara where traffic accidents are caused by speeding, saying, "Our aim here is to ensure traffic and road safety, minimize material and injury accidents caused by speeding, and raise awareness among road users. When road users see a radar application point, they should not fall into the perception that it is only for speed detection; at the same time, our personnel also apply penalties for violations such as not wearing seatbelts, using mobile phones, dangerous lane changes, and weaving, which we frequently observe and that cause accidents. Since the image recording is done on a vehicle basis, it provides us with visual evidence. We apply penalties manually for these. In the past, we had to zoom in on vehicles to detect license plates through a manual user or personnel. This system does not require any user intervention. If our road has 5 or 6 lanes, it scans the entire road to detect vehicle license plates. It automatically detects the legal speed limit according to the class of each vehicle, and we do not intervene in any way; it applies all penalties itself," he said.
