South Korean authorities have launched an investigation following the deaths of three people during vehicle testing at the Hyundai Motor factory in Ulsan.
According to a statement from the Hyundai workers' union, two Hyundai researchers and a contractor employee were found unconscious inside a vehicle in the test chamber around 3:00 PM. Media reports indicate that the three individuals died from asphyxiation.
Police officials in Ulsan reported that the police and the Ministry of Labor have initiated a comprehensive investigation into the incident. Fire department officials stated that the first report regarding the accident at Hyundai's No. 4 factory was received at 3:17 PM.
Hyundai Motor expressed deep sorrow over the incident and announced that they would fully cooperate with the relevant authorities in the investigation.
The Ulsan factory, Hyundai's largest production facility, has an annual production capacity of 1.4 million vehicles, of which 1.1 million are exported. The company began construction of a new facility worth 2 trillion won (1.44 billion dollars) for electric vehicle production in Ulsan last November.
