Accordingly, tourism revenues, which amounted to 11.9 billion dollars in the 4th quarter of 2023, increased by 14.5% to 13 billion 788 million 36 thousand dollars in the same period of 2024. The total tourism revenue for 2024 reached 61 billion 103 million 419 thousand dollars, marking the highest level in the history of the Republic, with an increase of 8.3% compared to the previous year.
VISITOR NUMBERS INCREASED BY 9%
The number of visitors increased by 9% in 2024 compared to the previous year, reaching 62 million 232 thousand 447 people. Of these, 15.4% were expatriate citizens residing abroad, totaling 9 million 599 thousand 727 people. In the 4th quarter of 2024, the number of visitors also increased by 11.6% compared to the same quarter of the previous year, reaching 13 million 917 thousand 894 people. Expatriate citizens accounted for 17.4% of the visitors, totaling 2 million 416 thousand 884 people. This year, the share of package tour expenditures among the tourism revenues obtained from visitors was 28.8%, the share of food and beverage expenditures was 19.4%, and the share of international transportation expenditures was 12.5%.
ALL EXPENDITURES INCREASED
Compared to the previous year, package tour expenditures increased by 22.7%, food and beverage expenditures by 7.4%, and international transportation expenditures by 0.9%. In the 4th quarter, the share of package tour expenditures among the tourism revenues obtained from visitors was 27.2%, the share of food and beverage expenditures was 20.7%, and the share of international transportation expenditures was 13%. Compared to the same quarter of the previous year, package tour expenditures increased by 23.2%, food and beverage expenditures by 26.3%, and international transportation expenditures by 5.2%. Annually, the primary purpose of visitors' arrivals was 'travel, entertainment, sports, and cultural activities' at 64.9%, while expatriate citizens came primarily for 'visiting relatives and friends' at 69.6%. Of this, 6 billion 312 million 625 thousand dollars were personal expenditures, and 1 billion 428 million 377 thousand dollars were package tour expenditures. In the 4th quarter, tourism expenditures decreased by 10.4% compared to the same quarter of the previous year, amounting to 2 billion 131 million 329 thousand dollars. Of this, 1 billion 739 million 794 thousand dollars were personal expenditures, and 391 million 535 thousand dollars were package tour expenditures.
THE MOST VISITORS CAME FROM RUSSIA
According to information obtained from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the most visitors in 2024 came from the Russian Federation. Following the 6.7 million visitors from the Russian Federation, Germany had 6.6 million, and the United Kingdom had 4.4 million visitors. With the strategic changes made in tourism policies in 2018, there was a significant increase in the per capita overnight spending figures in 2024. While the per capita overnight spending of a foreign visitor was 100 dollars in 2023, this figure rose to 108 dollars in 2024, reflecting an 8% increase.
GOALS REVISED, RECORD BROKEN
The per capita overnight spending of foreign visitors and expatriate citizens in 2024 increased by 5.4% from 92 dollars to 97 dollars compared to the previous year. The Ministry started 2024 with a target of 60 million visitors and 60 billion dollars in revenue. In recent months, the foreign visitor target was revised upwards to 61 million people. According to the figures announced by the Turkish Statistical Institute, these targets were surpassed, and a record was set in the Republic in 2024.
