The world-famous beach on Greece's Zakynthos Island, known for the Navagio shipwreck and its turquoise cove, has been closed to visitors until October 31 due to landslide risk. It was announced that the decision was made after an American tourist was seriously injured last week when a landslide caused him to fall from a cliff.
The cove famous for Navagio Beach, located on the Greek island of Zakynthos and visited by tens of thousands of tourists every year, has been temporarily closed due to the risk of landslides.
In line with a decision made by the Municipality of Zakynthos and the Greek Ministry of Tourism, access to the beach has been banned until October 31.
TOURISTS CAN ONLY SEE FROM A DISTANCE
Under the decision, visitors will not be allowed to go down to the beach. Tourists can only view the Navagio Shipwreck and the cove from an observation platform set up in the area.
The region, known for its turquoise sea, white sand, and the sunken ship on the shore, is among the most photographed tourist spots in the world and attracts great interest, especially during the summer months.
US TOURIST SERIOUSLY INJURED
An accident that occurred last week played a role in the imposition of the ban. According to a report by Yaşar Anter from Sözcü, officials stated that a US tourist was seriously injured after falling from a cliff due to a landslide.
While it was noted that similar incidents have occurred in the area before, it was decided to temporarily close the beach for the safety of visitors.
LANDSLIDE RISK RAISES CONCERNS
Experts highlight that rockfalls and landslides occasionally occur on the high cliffs surrounding Navagio Cove. Authorities have stated that restrictions in the area will continue until the risk is eliminated.
