After 8.5 years, US President Trump, visiting China, and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a historic two-hour meeting. Trade, the Taiwan issue, and the Iran war were key topics. Following the summit, the White House announced that Trump and President Xi agreed on keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and that Iran should never possess nuclear weapons.
U.S. President Donald Trump met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing during his visit to China for bilateral and delegation-level talks.
PARTNERSHIP MESSAGE BEFORE THE MEETING
Xi stated at the beginning of the meeting that he wanted to discuss issues concerning both countries and the world with U.S. President Trump, and to move relations in the right direction, opening a new chapter for the future.
Noting that transformations unseen in a century are accelerating globally, the international situation is volatile and turbulent, and the world is at a new historical crossroads, Xi said, "China and the U.S. must jointly respond to the challenges of our time."
Emphasizing that China and the U.S. share more common interests than differences, and that one country's success would be an opportunity for the other, Xi expressed that the two countries should be partners, not rivals, contributing to each other's success and prosperity, and finding the right way for major powers to get along.
Xi pointed out that good relations between two major powers benefit the world as well, stating, "We are ready to set the right course for the great ship of China-U.S. relations, making 2026 a historic turning point that opens a new page in relations."
Underlining that economic and trade ties between China and the U.S. are based on mutual benefit and a win-win relationship, Xi commented, "There are no winners in trade wars. If there are disagreements and frictions, consultation on an equal footing is the only option for resolution."
Regarding the Taiwan issue, Xi emphasized that maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is the "greatest common ground" between China and the U.S.
TRUMP: THE GREATEST SUMMIT EVER
U.S. President Trump also expressed in his opening remarks that he looked forward to discussing "great issues" with Xi, noting that some have said this might be "the greatest summit ever."
Stating his belief that relations between the U.S. and China will be better than ever, Trump said, "When we face difficulties, we know how to overcome them. Together, we will have a great future."
TRUMP AND XI AGREED ON IRAN
The first statement after the 2-hour meeting came from the White House. The White House stated, "The U.S. and China agreed that Iran should never possess nuclear weapons and that the Strait of Hormuz should remain open."
