In the US midterm elections, Democrats won historic victories in states where Republicans were strong, dealing a major blow to Trump. Abdul El-Sayed, elected in Michigan, became the first Muslim elected to the US Senate.
Democrats dealt a heavy blow to President Donald Trump by winning majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the midterm elections held in the US. Victories in states where Republicans are traditionally strong led to comments that the political power of the MAGA movement is weakening.
In the midterm elections, Democratic candidates achieved significant successes in Republican-strong states such as Texas, South Carolina, and Kansas.
In Texas, Democratic candidate James Talarico defeated Trump-backed Republican Ken Paxton. In South Carolina, a Democratic candidate was elected senator for the first time since 1998.
A historic result also emerged in Kansas. The state sent a Democratic candidate to the US Senate for the first time since 1932.
Democrats also won Senate races in Iowa and Ohio, where Trump won by more than 10 points in the 2024 presidential election.
In the Michigan Senate race, Democrat Abdul El-Sayed declared victory against Republican rival Mike Rogers. With this result, El-Sayed became the first Muslim elected to the US Senate.
Democrats described the election results as a great success and called their victories a "blue tsunami".
Midterm elections turned into a referendum on Trump
The midterm elections, in which Trump was not a candidate, amounted to a nationwide referendum on the president's policies. The heavy defeat suffered by Republicans caused a great resonance in the White House, while debates began within the party about who was responsible for the results.
Post-election polls showed that voters were dissatisfied with the Trump administration, especially on the cost of living. According to the polls, voters believe the administration failed to lower the living costs of ordinary Americans.
The Republicans' loss in the elections also signaled a significant shift in Trump's strong MAGA base. It is assessed that the results could also negatively affect Vice President JD Vance's chances of running in the 2028 presidential election.
Trump's room for maneuver in Congress will narrow
Trump, having lost the majority in both chambers of Congress, will see his political room for maneuver narrow significantly in the last two years of his term.
The way will be opened for committees controlled by Democrats to launch corruption investigations into Trump, his family, and his inner circle. It is also among the possibilities that Trump will face an impeachment process for the third time during his term.
Democratic Congressman Robert Garcia, who will chair the House Oversight Committee, will lead some of the investigations. After the election results, Garcia gave a two-word harsh message to Trump and his team: "Hire a lawyer."
Democrats' taking control of Congress will also make it harder for Trump to implement his legislative agenda. The president is expected to resort more to executive orders in areas within his authority, such as tariffs, immigration policy, foreign policy, and military decisions.
Trump will also be able to use his veto power to block laws Democrats want to pass.
Trump's reaction to election results
After it was confirmed that the majority in the House of Representatives had passed to the Democrats, Trump reacted to the election results with a statement on his Truth Social account.
Trump said, "I wasn't on the ballot. If I had been, we would have won a landslide victory."
The president had also targeted the exit polls published by Fox News after the first polls closed on election night. Trump criticized the questions asked in the polls on Truth Social and described them as "nonsense."
According to the Fox News poll, 87 percent of voters were concerned about gas prices. 62 percent of participants held Trump responsible for high gas prices.
Trump later sent a message to Fox News host Greg Gutfeld during a live broadcast, blaming the previous administration. In his message, Trump said, "I inherited the highest prices and inflation in history from Sleepy Joe. Prices are falling rapidly."
