US President Donald Trump made a notable call to Canadian companies amid the escalating trade tension with Canada. Trump urged Canada-based companies doing business with the US to move their operations to his country, saying that companies returning to the US would not face tariffs.
“THEY SHOULD MOVE TO THE US IMMEDIATELY”
In a post on his social media account, Trump addressed all Canadian companies trading with the US.
Trump called on “all Canadian companies doing business with America to move to the United States immediately,” while arguing that some companies had previously moved from the US to Canada.
“NO TARIFFS IF YOU RETURN”
The US President stated that if companies that moved to Canada return to the US, they will not be subject to customs duties.
In his post, Trump conveyed the message, “When you move again, there are no tariffs.” He also claimed that Canada-based businesses are turning toward the US, saying his country would increase domestic production, particularly in the automotive sector.
TRADE WAR IS ESCALATING
Trump’s statement came at a time when trade tensions between Washington and Ottawa were escalating again. As of August 22, the US began imposing an additional 50% tariff on approximately $27.6 billion worth of Canadian goods, while Canada announced retaliatory tariffs on US products.
The Trump administration is also applying additional 50% tariffs on certain automotive products imported from Canada.
