Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen, speaking at the Economic Forum held in France, announced that they have been subjected to very serious and unacceptable pressure from the United States for two years due to their strategic location. Stating that three days ago, the US Special Representative informed him that President Donald Trump has abandoned the idea of annexing Greenland, Nielsen said, "We do not give up our right to self-determination, we are not for sale."
The "Aix-en-Provence Economic Forum," which began yesterday in the city of Aix-en-Provence in southern France, continues as Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot spoke during a panel titled "One world, many views: who imposes their own?" held as part of the forum.
"TRUMP HAS GIVEN UP ON THE IDEA OF ANNEXING GREENLAND" Nielsen began his speech by commenting on the hot weather in France. When asked whether Trump's desire to take over Greenland still holds, Nielsen said, "Because we are in a strategic region, Greenland has been subjected to very serious pressure for two years. These are unacceptable pressures."
Nielsen stated that they cannot yet see the end of these pressures but are trying to take measures by establishing direct dialogue between the US and Greenland, noting that he observes the world undergoing a process of change.
Emphasizing their desire to ensure security in their region, Nielsen underscored that they want to develop partnerships with countries that uphold principles such as democracy, as well as respect for international law and human rights.
Within the scope of this "crisis," Nielsen noted that France and the European Union (EU) have provided them with support, saying, "Three days ago, the US Special Representative for Greenland told us that Donald Trump has given up on the idea of annexing Greenland, but the pressure is still here."
Jens-Frederik Nielsen "GREENLAND WILL NEVER GIVE UP ITS RIGHT TO SELF-DETERMINATION" Stating that Greenland will always stand by the EU, Nielsen said, "Greenland wants to stand by France, the Nordic countries, Denmark, and NATO."
Nielsen pointed out that they should also get closer to Canada, noting that everyone would benefit from this, and indicated that Greenland could help European countries become less dependent on China for mining activities.
Greenland's Prime Minister Nielsen assessed, "Greenland will never give up its right to self-determination, we will never give up our principles, and we are not for sale."
"THE PEOPLE OF GREENLAND HAVE CHOSEN EUROPE, NATO" French Foreign Minister Barrot said, "Under America's immense and imperialist pressure, Jens Frederik Nielsen stood up and said 'No.' The people of Greenland have chosen Europe, NATO. (Greenland) is not for sale, it is not something that can be taken."
Barrot noted that Nielsen acted incredibly courageously on this matter.
