U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the country ranks 40th in the world in education achievement but is 1st in terms of spending per student, saying, "I want the Department of Education to be shut down immediately." Trump mentioned that the employees of the institution are not coming to work because they are all working from home, adding, "These people will be fired. Because we need to downsize our government."
After officially taking office, U.S. President Donald Trump, who took many measures to cut public spending by federal government agencies, has now targeted the Department of Education. Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump stated that the Department of Education should be closed.
In response to the question, "How soon do you want the Department of Education to be closed?" Trump replied, "I want it closed immediately," and added, "Look, there is a lot of fraud happening in the Department of Education." Questioning the institution's efficiency, Trump said, "They ranked the best 40 countries in the world. We are 40th. However, in one area, we are number one: cost per student." He argued that the U.S. spends more per student than any other country in the world, saying, "But we are 40th. We were between 38 and 40. The last time I looked, it was 38. And two days ago, I looked at the new list. It was 40th. So we are 40th."
"SOMETHING IS WRONG"
Comparing the U.S. to other countries in education, Trump stated, "Norway, Denmark, Sweden. I hate to say this, but China, no matter how big it is, is in the top five, and they are our primary competitor." Despite this, Trump emphasized that the U.S. is in 40th place, asking, "So if we are 40th, that really means something is wrong, right?"
"THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT FARMERS' CHILDREN"
Claiming that bureaucrats in the capital do not "care about equal opportunities in education," Trump said, "Most of the people in Washington DC do not care about rural children. They do not care about farms, the daughters and sons of farmers." Trump mentioned that there is a "huge bureaucracy" in Washington DC and Department of Education buildings everywhere, stating, "By the way, no one is coming to work. Because they all work from home, you know, 'they are working from home.' And many of them have second jobs." He expressed that another issue of concern for Elon Musk, who heads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), is this, saying, "How many of these people are getting paid to work from home but are not working? Because they have second and even third jobs. You will see many of them, and these people will be fired. Because we need to shrink our government."
HE HAD SAID HE WOULD GIVE INSTRUCTIONS TO MUSK
Trump had previously stated that he would soon instruct Musk to investigate the Department of Education. Pointing to possible fraud, Trump said, "He will find the same thing. Then I will go to the military. Let's check the military. We will find billions, hundreds of billions of dollars in fraud and abuse. But I built my campaign on this."
