As the migrant influx in July to Ceuta, Spain's territory in North Africa, turned into protest demonstrations involving thousands of people across the country, a striking comment came from US President Donald Trump, who has often criticized Madrid for not supporting operations against Iran. Trump said, 'Spain will be destroyed. I have had problems with Spain too. But watching what is happening there is very sad.'
After the entry of approximately 70,000 irregular migrants from Morocco into Sebta (Ceuta), Spain's territory in North Africa, on July 30-31, the opposition right-wing and far-right parties, which hold the left-leaning government responsible for the crisis, held demonstrations across the country.
PEOPLE TOOK TO THE STREETS IN MANY CITIES
"Sebta Day," celebrated every year on September 2, referring to Sebta being under Spanish sovereignty, turned into demonstrations of support for the city and protests against the government nationwide this year. The demonstrations, held in all major cities across the country, especially in the capital Madrid, upon the call of the Federation of Municipalities, were also supported by the main opposition right-wing People's Party (PP) and the far-right Vox.
THEY DEMAND THE RESIGNATION OF THE GOVERNMENT
In the demonstrations, which coincided with about a month after the irregular migrant crisis, thousands of people showed support for Sebta being under Spanish sovereignty, demanded a solution to the irregular migrant crisis in the city, and reacted to the way the minority left coalition government managed the crisis.
The demonstrators, carrying Spanish flags, chanted "government resign" slogans in the squares.
"SPAIN WILL BE DESTROYED"
A comment came from Trump drawing attention to the protests in Spain. Trump said, "Spain will be destroyed. I have had problems with Spain too. But it is very sad to watch what is happening there."
MIGRANT CRISIS IN SPAIN
Approximately 70,000 irregular migrants had swum from the shores of the city of Fnideq in Morocco to Sebta, Spain's territory in North Africa, on July 30-31.
It was reported that all available resources of the Spanish government were mobilized regarding the incident.
The Spanish government had decided to deploy armed forces to the region to ensure security after the increase in irregular migration attempts towards Sebta.
The number of irregular migrants who lost their lives while trying to cross from Morocco to Spain was announced as 88.
