U.S. President Trump stated that NATO has been telling Denmark for 20 years, "You need to remove the Russian threat from Greenland," adding, "Unfortunately, Denmark has not been able to do anything about it. Now the time has come, and this will be done."

U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Denmark "has done nothing to protect Greenland from the Russian threat," saying, "The time has come, and this will be done."

Trump shared a post about Greenland on his social media account. Claiming that NATO has warned Denmark for 20 years to protect Greenland from the Russian threat, Trump alleged that Denmark has done nothing in this regard. He included the statements, "The time has come, and this will be done."

TRUMP'S GREENLAND THREAT

Trump had expressed that his country "needs Greenland for national security purposes" and that this is "vital for the constructed Golden Dome." Following a meeting of the foreign ministers of the U.S., Denmark, and Greenland in Washington, it was noted that fundamental disagreements continued, and it was recorded that the U.S. has an "open desire to seize Greenland."

The autonomous region of Greenland, which is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, had previously rejected approaches from the U.S. that included the transfer of sovereignty. Recently, Denmark had called for increased military cooperation in the region with its allies. In this context, European countries had announced that they would send small military units and officers to Greenland.

THREAT OF CUSTOMS DUTIES ON 8 COUNTRIES

In response, Trump argued that world peace is at risk in the discussions regarding Greenland, announcing that he would impose customs duties on Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, England, the Netherlands, and Finland for opposing the U.S. taking Greenland.

Trump stated that a 10% customs duty would be applied to the 8 European countries going to Greenland starting from February 1, 2026, and that the tax rate would increase to 25% after June 1, 2026, adding that the rate would remain this way until an agreement is reached for the complete and unconditional purchase of Greenland.
