NEW US President Donald Trump announced that the 50 percent tariffs on some products imported from Canada, which were scheduled to take effect Wednesday morning local time, have been suspended for three days.

US President Donald Trump announced that he has suspended for three days the 50 percent tariffs planned to be applied to some products imported from Canada, effective Wednesday morning local time.

TRUMP ANNOUNCED VIA SOCIAL MEDIA

In a statement made through his social media account, Trump said he made this decision following an agreement reached with Canada.

In his post, Trump stated, "I have suspended for a three-day period the 50 percent tariffs on Canada, which were scheduled to go into effect tomorrow morning, due to the fact that the US and Canada have reached an agreement, subject to the finalization of the documents."

Last month, the US administration had announced that it would impose 50 percent tariffs on certain goods imported from Canada, claiming that Canada had engaged in "discriminatory" practices against American products.

TARIFFS WENT INTO EFFECT TODAY

In a statement from the White House, it was noted that Trump signed three separate presidential proclamations imposing additional tariffs on certain products of Canadian origin under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930.

The statement, which said each proclamation imposed an additional 50 percent tariff on different groups of products imported from Canada, reported that this included various products ranging from wine to hockey sticks and cement.

The statement also conveyed that the said tariff would go into effect on August 19.
