The number of unemployed people in Turkey decreased by 27 thousand people compared to the previous month in May 2024, reaching 3 million 11 thousand people. The unemployment rate also decreased by 0.1 percentage points to 8.4 percent.
The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) has announced the May Labor Force Statistics. According to the results of the Household Labor Force Survey, the number of unemployed people aged 15 and over decreased by 27 thousand people compared to the previous month, reaching 3 million 11 thousand people in May 2024. The unemployment rate decreased by 0.1 points to 8.4 percent. The unemployment rate was estimated at 7.0 percent for men and 11.0 percent for women.
EMPLOYMENT RATE INCREASED BY 0.4 POINTS
The number of employed people increased by 273 thousand people compared to the previous month, reaching 32 million 920 thousand people in May 2024. The employment rate increased by 0.4 points to 50 percent. This rate was 67.3 percent for men and 33 percent for women.
UNEMPLOYMENT RATE AMONG YOUTH IS 15 PERCENT
The labor force increased by 245 thousand people compared to the previous month, reaching 35 million 931 thousand people in May 2024. The labor force participation rate increased by 0.3 points to 54.5 percent. The labor force participation rate was 72.4 percent for men and 37.1 percent for women. The unemployment rate among the youth aged 15-24, increased by 0.3 points compared to the previous month, reaching 15.0 percent. In this age group, the unemployment rate was estimated at 12.8 percent for men and 19.3 percent for women.
ACTUAL WORKING HOURS WERE 43.9 HOURS
The average actual weekly working hours of those employed and present at work during the reference period, adjusted for seasonal and calendar effects, decreased by 0.3 hours compared to the previous month, reaching 43.9 hours in May 2024. The underemployment rate, which consists of time-related underemployment, potential labor force, and unemployed, decreased by 2.0 points to 25.2 percent. The integrated rate of time-related underemployment and unemployed was 17.4 percent, while the integrated rate of unemployed and potential labor force was estimated at 17.1 percent.
