The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) data shows that a total of 715,029 people from 10 earthquake-prone provinces migrated to other cities in 2023. The city that had the highest emigration from the earthquake zone was Hatay with 164,247 people. TÜİK has published the "Internal Migration Statistics" for the year 2023. According to this, a total of 3,450,953 people migrated between provinces in Turkey in 2023. Of this population, 47.9% were men and 52.1% were women. The rate of inter-provincial migration, which was 3.18% in the 2007-2008 period, fluctuated over the years and reached 4.04% in 2023. THE PROVINCE THAT RECEIVED THE LEAST MIGRATION IS ARDAHANWhen looking at the distribution of the population migrating between provinces in Turkey, Istanbul was the province that received the most migration with 412,707 people. Ankara followed with 232,700 people and İzmir with 147,765 people. The provinces that received the least migration were Ardahan with 6,856 people, Bayburt with 10,202 people, and Tunceli with 11,806 people. ISTANBUL IS ALSO THE PROVINCE THAT EMIGRATED THE MOSTIstanbul was the province that had the highest emigration with 581,330 people, followed by Ankara with 208,740 people and Hatay with 164,247 people. The provinces that had the least emigration were Ardahan with 6,811 people, Tunceli with 7,234 people, and Kilis with 7,604 people. OVER 715,000 PEOPLE MIGRATED FROM THE EARTHQUAKE ZONEThe intense migration from the region following the earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.7 and 7.6 centered in Kahramanmaraş is also reflected in the TÜİK data. A total of 715,029 people from 10 provinces in the earthquake zone migrated to other places in 2023. The city that had the highest emigration from the earthquake zone was Hatay with 164,247 people. Malatya followed with 102,621 people, and Kahramanmaraş with 82,119 people. 77,898 people migrated from Adana, and 73,835 people migrated from Gaziantep. 63,878 people moved from Diyarbakır, 63,559 from Şanlıurfa, and 48,372 from Adıyaman to other cities. The provinces that had the least emigration among the earthquake zone cities were Osmaniye and Kilis. 30,896 people migrated from Osmaniye, and 7,604 people migrated from Kilis. THE MOST MIGRATION OCCURRED IN THE 20-24 AGE GROUPIn Turkey, the largest migration movement in terms of magnitude in 2023 occurred in the 20-24 age group with 647,191 people. In this age group, 43.4% of the migrants were men, and 56.6% were women. Out of the 3,450,953 people who migrated between provinces in Turkey in 2023, 601,481 migrated depending on a family member in the household. When other reasons for migration were examined, it was seen that 518,016 people migrated for better housing and living conditions, and 512,011 people migrated for educational reasons. EDUCATION AND NATURAL DISASTERS WERE THE MAIN REASONS FOR MIGRATION IN WOMENIn Turkey in 2023, the most important reason for migration by gender was better housing and living conditions for men with 257,277 people, while for women, it was migration depending on a family member in the household with 361,015 people. For men, migration depending on a family member in the household and natural disasters/emergencies, and for women, education and natural disasters/emergencies were among the other important reasons for migration. EDUCATION WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT REASON FOR MIGRATION IN YOUNG PEOPLEIn Turkey in 2023, when the reasons for migration of the 20-24 age group, which had the highest migration movement, were examined, it was seen that education was the most important reason. Out of the migrants in this age group, 231,477 migrated for education, 94,139 for starting a job/finding a job, and 50,008 for better housing and living conditions.
