Turkey's state-run aid agency has established greenhouses at five schools in the southern African kingdom of Lesotho to help learners gain skills in agriculture and agribusiness.

Speaking at the handover ceremony held last Friday, Abdulkadir Abukan, the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency's (TIKA) Pretoria coordinator, said: "Education is one of the most important sectors for development and it is Turkey's priority to support such projects."

TIKA installed a greenhouse at each school. They contain a water tank and drip irrigation system, with seedlings and other agricultural material.

Abukan said the greenhouses will contribute to the school feeding program as well as help students improve their knowledge in agriculture. Four schools which benefited from the greenhouses are located in the Leribe district and the fifth one is in the Berea district.

Lesotho's Education Minister Mamookho Phiri thanked TIKA for its efforts and urged it to continue supporting other schools in the country as well.

TIKA also donated personal protective equipment to help the Lesotho government curb the spread of COVID-19. -
