The weeks-long military quiet between the US and Iran was broken by Washington's attack on Lark Island, strategically located in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps confirmed the attack, reporting that according to initial assessments, 2 people were killed and 2 others were injured. It was noteworthy that the attack took place at a time when the US was emphasizing economic pressure over military operations against Iran.
The relative military calm that had prevailed for weeks in the conflict between the USA and Iran has been broken. The US military has carried out an attack on Lark Island, which holds strategic importance in the Strait of Hormuz, belonging to Iran.
EXPLOSION SOUNDS HEARD
Iran's Fars News Agency reported that explosion sounds were heard around Lark Island. The report noted that the exact location and cause of the explosion were not yet clear, that follow-up efforts were ongoing to clarify the details, and that further news would be announced later.
REVOLUTIONARY GUARD CONFIRMED: THERE ARE DEAD AND WOUNDED
Iran's Tasnim News Agency, on the other hand, stated that a drone strike had been carried out on a point on Lark Island. Citing unofficial sources, Tasnim reported that 2 people were killed and 2 others were wounded in the attack.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) also confirmed that the US military had carried out an attack on Lark Island, reporting that there were dead and wounded. However, the statement provided few details.
THE US HAD STOPPED ATTACKS
The attack on Lark Island came at a time when the Washington administration was emphasizing economic pressure over military options regarding Iran. While there had been no mutual airstrikes between the USA and Iran for weeks, attacks on ships around the Strait of Hormuz had continued.
It was alleged that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had conveyed to allied countries the message that Washington would not launch a new, comprehensive military operation against Iran in the short term. According to Axios, the US was planning to increase pressure on Tehran through a naval blockade and new economic sanctions.
Despite this, Washington has not ruled out the possibility of a military response if Iran were to carry out a new attack. US President Donald Trump also announced that mines in the international waters of the Strait of Hormuz had been cleared, warning that if the area were re-mined, Iranian ships doing so would be struck.
WHY IS LARK ISLAND IMPORTANT?
Lark Island, located off the coast of Iran, commands one of the most critical transit points in the Strait of Hormuz. Due to this feature, the island stands out as an important center in Iran's military activities in the region.
It is stated that Iran monitors maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz via Lark Island, deploys speedboats there, and can threaten the passage of ships using naval mines when necessary. Because of these features, the island is considered one of the strategic points supporting Tehran's military control over the strait.
