The water level in the Yeşilırmak River rose following the heavy rainfall affecting Tokat in recent days and the overflow of the Almus Dam spillway. As the river's flow rate increased amid a flood alert issued for the city center, dangerous conditions emerged around the Atatürk Bridge.
Following the rains in winter and spring, the Almus Dam, which reached 100% capacity, continues to discharge excess water through its spillway. The discharge has increased the flow of the Yeşilırmak River, which passes through the city center of Tokat and some districts.
GOVERNOR AND OFFICIALS CONDUCTED INSPECTIONS
Tokat Governor Abdullah Köklü, along with DSI General Director Mehmet Akif Balta, conducted inspections along the Yeşilırmak River. Köklü and his team also examined the area around Atatürk Bridge, where the water level has risen.
CITIZENS FLOCKED TO THE BRIDGE
Citizens who saw the rising water level in the city center during the night hours flocked to the bridge. Despite the flood risk, many people gathered around the bridge and recorded the moments with their mobile phones. Some citizens stated that the Yeşilırmak has not risen this high in many years.
WATER REACHED THE BRIDGE PIERS
The water, which turned brown and flowed rapidly, was observed to reach the bridge piers. The strong current under the bridge was particularly noticeable. Meanwhile, the rise in the Yeşilırmak was also captured from the air by a drone.
"STAY AWAY FROM THE RIVERBANK"
The footage shows a significant increase in the water flow, a dense crowd around the bridge, and the river approaching flood levels. Authorities warned citizens to stay away from streams and riverbanks.
