According to the latest data released by TÜİK, both marriages and divorces increased in 2024. Adıyaman had the highest crude marriage rate, while Syrian and Uzbek brides stood out in first place among foreign brides with 12.1%. Among foreign grooms, Syrians ranked first with 20.6%.
The Turkish Statistical Institute has published the marriage and divorce statistics for the year 2024.
According to this, the number of couples who got married last year was 567,011 in 2023, while it increased to 568,395 in 2024. The crude marriage rate, which expresses the number of marriages per thousand population, was determined to be 6.65 per thousand in 2024. The number of divorcing couples was 173,342 in 2023, while it reached 187,343 in 2024. The crude divorce rate, which expresses the number of divorces per thousand population, was calculated to be 2.19 per thousand last year.
THE AVERAGE AGE OF FIRST MARRIAGE INCREASED FOR BOTH GENDERS
When examining the average age of first marriage by year, it was observed that this age increased for both genders. The average age of first marriage in 2024 was found to be 28.3 for men and 25.8 for women. The average age difference between men and women at first marriage was recorded as 2.5 years.
ADIYAMAN HAD THE HIGHEST CRUDE MARRIAGE RATE
The province with the highest crude marriage rate last year was Adıyaman, with 7.76 per thousand, followed by Gaziantep with 7.68 per thousand and Kilis with 7.66 per thousand. The province with the lowest crude marriage rate was Tunceli, with 4.01 per thousand. Following Tunceli were Gümüşhane with 4.3 per thousand and Bayburt with 4.89 per thousand.
The proportion of foreigners among total marriages was also examined. Accordingly, the number of foreign grooms in 2024 was 5,923, which constituted 1% of the total grooms. The number of foreign brides was 29,115, accounting for 5.1% of the total brides.
12.1% OF FOREIGN BRIDES ARE SYRIAN
Among foreign grooms, Syrians ranked first with 20.6%. They were followed by German grooms with 19.5% and Afghan grooms with 5.7%. Among foreign brides, Syrians and Uzbeks drew attention as the first with 12.1%. They were followed by Moroccan brides with 8.3% and Azerbaijani brides with 7.5%.
THE HIGHEST CRUDE DIVORCE RATE IS IN ANTALYA
The province with the highest crude divorce rate in 2024 was recorded as Antalya, with 3.29 per thousand. Following this province were İzmir with 3.09 per thousand and Karaman with 3.04 per thousand. The province with the lowest crude divorce rate was determined to be Hakkari, with 0.45 per thousand. The provinces following Hakkari were Şırnak with 0.55 per thousand and Siirt and Muş with 0.6 per thousand each.
33.7% of divorces occurred within the first 5 years of marriage, while 21.3% occurred within the 6-10 years of marriage.
CUSTODY MOSTLY GOES TO THE MOTHER
As a result of finalized divorce cases, custody was granted to 186,536 children, with the majority going to the mother. Last year, 74.4% of the children's custody was given to the mother, while 25.6% was given to the father.
