US President Donald Trump canceled his scheduled weekend program in New Jersey and his attendance at his son's wedding while reports in the national press claimed he was considering potential new strikes against Iran.
Following reports in US-based news outlets such as the New York Post, CBS, and Fox News that US President Donald Trump is evaluating possible new military options against Iran, the US President canceled two programs planned for this weekend.
PROGRAMS CANCELED, STAYING IN THE CAPITAL
According to the White House schedule, Trump had planned to spend the weekend at his Bedminster golf club in New Jersey after attending an event in New York yesterday. However, the schedule was later changed, and it was announced that Trump would remain in Washington. Trump also announced on his Truth Social account that he would be unable to attend his eldest son Donald Trump Jr.'s wedding in the Bahamas due to "conditions related to the government."
DIPLOMATIC TRAFFIC ON THE US-IRAN LINE
Concurrently with Trump's cancellation of his itinerary, stating "I believe it is important for me to stay in Washington, at the White House, during this critical period," it was announced that Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff, Asim Munir, is conducting diplomatic contacts in Tehran to address the bottleneck in the US-Iran line. Pakistan's Interior Minister, Mohsin Naqvi, was also reported to have visited Tehran for a second time earlier this week.
"MUNIR AND ARAKCHI MET LATE INTO THE NIGHT"
Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Munir met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi late into the night. According to the ministry, the meeting addressed diplomatic initiatives to prevent an escalation of tensions and regional peace efforts. Islamabad hosted the first direct talks between Washington and Tehran in April, but the parties failed to reach an agreement.
ALLEGATIONS OF NEW ATTACK ON IRAN
The developments followed claims that the US military is preparing to launch new strikes against Iran this weekend.
Sources speaking to US-based CBS News suggested that Washington is evaluating possible military options against Iran this week. According to reports, Trump has also convened his closest advisors regarding an agenda for war with Iran, but no final decision has been made yet.
Iran, meanwhile, reiterated the message that it will not back down. While the Iranian government declared they "will not surrender," Iran's Revolutionary Guard warned that if the US launches a new attack, the war could "spread beyond the region."
