SHE WAS GOING TO BE A DOCTOR
The accident occurred on the evening of March 19 on Sayer Street in the Mevlana neighborhood of the Talas district. A car driven by Kadir E. with license plate 38 YE 008 collided with a motorcycle ridden by Yaren Mercan. In the accident, the motorcycle driver Mercan, who was thrown several meters, was injured. Mercan, a 4th-year student at Erciyes University Faculty of Medicine, lost her life in the hospital where she was taken a day later.
THE DRIVER WAS DRUNK
During the check of the detained car driver Kadir E., it was determined that he had 1.05 promil alcohol in his blood. The drunk driver was arrested after being brought before the court. Mercan, who lost her life, was buried in the city cemetery on March 21 after the autopsy procedures. At the funeral, a doctor's coat was placed over Yaren Mercan's coffin.
INDICTMENT WAS PREPARED
Following the investigation conducted by the Kayseri Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, a lawsuit was filed against Kadir E. in the 25th Criminal Court of First Instance for the crime of 'causing death by conscious negligence' with the prepared indictment.
At the third hearing of the case, the detained defendant Kadir E. participated from prison via SEGBIS, while Mercan's complainant father M.M. and the lawyers of the parties were present in the courtroom. Yaren Mercan's friends from the medical faculty came with their doctor's coats to support the family.
"IF ONLY SUCH AN EVENT HAD NOT HAPPENED"
The defendant Kadir E., who said he was regretful, stated, "I could not reach the family. I am sorry for being involved in such an event. If only such an event had not happened. If only I had not drunk alcohol. If I am released, I promise to meet with the mother. I regret that this happened. I am not a murderer. Nor am I a monster. When I am released, I will apologize to them. I am sorry. I request my release."
The father M.M., who stated that he raised his daughter under difficult conditions, requested that the defendant be punished to the maximum extent.
THE PRICE OF A LIFE IS ONLY 7 YEARS
The court judge sentenced the detained defendant Kadir E. to 7 years and 1 month in prison for the crime of 'causing death by conscious negligence' and ordered his release. The judge also ruled that the defendant's driver's license be confiscated for 2 years.
