Global markets were shaken by the US Treasury Department's surprise move to ease global liquidity tightness. The department's decision to double the maximum size of its liquidity support buyback operations for long-term securities quickly gave bond markets some breathing room.
Before this move, US 30-year Treasury yields, which had reached 5.31%, the highest level in 19 years, and were pressuring markets, fell 9 basis points to 5.18% immediately after the decision. This sudden pullback in bond yields provided a direct tailwind to precious metals under interest rate pressure.
